In “Ascriptive Organizational Stigma in an Immigrant Nonprofit Sector,” Assistant Professor Ali Chaudhary (Rutgers University) examines how Pakistani immigrant organizations encounter and respond to ascriptive stigma shaped by the ‘war on terror’. Through in-depth interviews conducted in London, Toronto and New York City, Ali finds that efforts to manage and respond to this stigma incur high costs in time and resources leading to mission-drift and, in some cases, cessation of activities. Ultimately, the experiences and consequences of ascriptive organizational stigma effectively constrain Pakistani immigrant organizations from serving their communities and promoting social change in the diaspora and in the homeland.
